Military council burns banknotes belonging to public in Palatwa

AB News April 1, 2024

A reliable source close to the Arakan Army has reported that during the AAs offensive, members of the military council burned down stacks of banknotes that belonged to the public before fleeing.

The source added that the charred remains of the banknotes were found at the headquarters of Infantry Battalion 289, which is located directly in front of the town.

AB News obtained photographs revealing 10 boxes filled with burnt banknotes inside the battalion’s compound. The majority of the burned banknotes were 10,000- and 5,000-Kyat denominations.

A resident of Palatwa, close to AA, told AB News that the terrorist group, Tamataw, destroyed the public funds by burning them when they were on the verge of defeat.

” They burned all the public funds of Palatwa at the 289 Battalion Headquarters before their downfall. I dont know the exact amount of money destroyed in the fire. But all the money of Palatwa was gone,” he stated.

It was discovered that following the resumption of fighting in the Palatwa region on November 13th, 2023, the military seized public funds from government banks and kept them in their headquarters compound.

On January 10, 2024, the Arakan Army announced the complete capture of the 289 Infantry Battalion based in Palatwa, along with a large amount of weapons and military equipment, at 7:10 a.m.

On January 14th, the Arakan Army announced that they had captured all military bases, including Infantry Battalion 289, and declared the Palatwa region free of the military council’s forces.
